Is it safe to forward school emails to an app?

Last updated:

Forwarding school emails to an app is usually safer than connecting your whole inbox, because the app only sees the messages you choose to send. How safe it is depends on the app. Check who can see what you send, whether your data is sold or used for ads, and whether you can delete it.

Forwarding vs. connecting your email account

Family apps get your school emails in one of two ways. The difference matters.

Forwarding Connecting your email account
What the app can see Only the emails you send it Possibly your whole mailbox, depending on the access you grant
Who decides You, one email at a time One permission, granted once
How to stop Stop forwarding Remove the app’s access in your email account settings
Extra checks Depends on the app’s own policies Apps that read Gmail must pass Google’s review and an annual security assessment

Connecting isn’t unsafe by default. Google holds apps that read Gmail to strict rules, including a ban on selling that data or using it for ads. But connecting gives an app far more than school emails: work mail, bank alerts and personal messages too. Forwarding keeps the app’s view to the one thing you need help with.

What’s in a typical school email

Knowing what’s in an email helps you decide what to forward. A school or activity email often includes:

  • Your child’s name, grade, teacher and school
  • Dates, times and places for events
  • Links to school portals or sign-up forms
  • Sometimes other families’ names, emails or a class list
  • Sometimes earlier replies in a long thread

Six questions to ask before forwarding to any app

  1. Does it need access to my inbox, or only the emails I forward?
  2. Who can see what I send? Only people I invite, or anyone else?
  3. Is my data sold or used for ads?
  4. Is what I send used to train AI models?
  5. Can I delete my data and my account?
  6. Is the privacy policy easy to find and written in plain language?

If an app can’t answer these clearly, don’t send it your kids’ information.

Tips for forwarding safely

  • Forward only school, camp and activity emails. Leave everything else in your inbox.
  • Trim long threads. Delete earlier replies you don’t need before you forward.
  • Skip emails with login links or passwords. Some school emails include a link that signs you straight into a portal. Forwarding it can share that access.
  • Leave out medical and financial details unless the app needs them.
  • Save the forwarding address as a contact, so you never send to the wrong place.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to forward school emails to an app?

Usually, yes. Forwarding shares only the emails you choose. Check that the app limits who sees your data, doesn't sell it and lets you delete it.

Is forwarding safer than giving an app access to my Gmail?

Forwarding shares less. A connected app can often read your whole mailbox, while forwarding shares only the emails you send.

Can school emails include other families' information?

Yes. Class lists, group replies and sign-up sheets can include other parents' names and emails. Trim them before forwarding when you can.

Does FERPA protect emails I forward to an app?

FERPA sets rules for how schools handle student records. It doesn't govern apps you choose to use, so read the app's privacy policy.

Does Kiddash read my email?

No. Kiddash never connects to your email account. It only sees the emails you forward.

Who can see what I forward to Kiddash?

Only the people you invite to your family.
